The BBC yesterday published the story
"Call to rethink child BMI testing".
I thought the last sentence was priceless:
"A lack of evidence doesn't mean that something doesn't actually work."
If an article about any CAM modality included that line, the hacks would be lining up to pronounce the death of the lot (again). RIP evidence-based allopathic medicine? ;)
More seriously, I'd be interested to know from osteopaths who choose to specialise in the treatment of children (or even if you don't particularly), what you think the 'causes' of childhood obesity are, and how childrens' overall health is changing (or not) from your experience.
First of all, there is the GI (glyceamic index) — the rate at which sugars (e.g. starch, fructose) breaks down to glucose. Sugars are naturally in all food that are not meat, fish or eggs (generally speaking).
So when you eat sugars, they're digested into glucose, which is assimilated. When in the blood stream the glucose needs to get into cells for energy. The hormone responsible for the level of glucose in the blood (and therefore if it goes into cells for energy or not) is our friend insulin.
So, the higher the GI of the food, the fast it breaks down to glucose, the greater the amount of glucose diffuses into the blood, the greater the amount of insulin required to reduce/balance the glucose blood level. Moreover, if high GI foods are consumed regularly, the pancreas (Islet of Langerhans) gets sensitized to sugars. That means that there will generally be a lot of/too much insulin secreted.
So what's the deal with insulin? It stimulates use of glucose (or glycogen) for energy and stimulates fat storage. The more insulin, the more fat is stored rather that used for energy. So that makes you fat!
Furthermore, the pancreas being under chronic high demand (more and more with progression with due to syndrome X, increased end organ resistance) leads to degeneration (therefore, Diabetes) just like with joints that are in lesion/hyper-mobile. Type 2 is nowadays becoming not uncommon in teenagers, some books will have to get edited!
The more the food is refined the weaker the bonds in the molecules, so the easier it is for the body to digest them, therefore, the higher the GI. e.g. white pasta, rice, bread, couscous...
Also, professor Jones, did some research on food additives (colorant and preservatives) more than 20 years ago. He found that they get stored or stuck in cell membrane and impairs their function. He predicted increase in cancer due to impaired communication between cells via their membranes. Cancer is basically an uncontrolled growth of cells. Cancer did use to be a rather rare disease! He also predicted an increase in autoimmune diseases due to the white blood cells not being able to communicate properly with other cells via membranes (the MHC-2 story i think, to see in physiology notes).
If you go in a supermarket and look at the back of the food in the ingredients section you'll see it is far less common to find foods with no additives than foods with. Typically sauces. The main ones seem to be sugar, modified starch, dextrose, sodium bicarbonate. I even found sugar in mackerel! (If you shop in Sainsbury, check it out, its the smoked one, the pepper corn and normal one is alright).
In brief, given all the crap added to our daily food, crap that the body cannot metabolize and which are in the end a poison as they impair its function, it is not surprising that we're noticing an increase in diseases in adults and in kids, starting from an altered development in childhood. For me, this way of thinking puts in perspective loads of diseases that we don't (or do) know the cause of, naming ADD.
For me, this is a big manipulation of the system. making people ill is so profitable at many many different levels: Industrial agriculture, pesticides, additives, drug companies, medicine (Managed by our government and its taxes).
Another manipulation is life style, which does contribute to obesity. Energy input = energy output = No weight gain. Energy input < energy output = weight loss (to a point). Energy input > energy output = weight gain.
Personally, I think physical activity should be done daily (doesn't have to be an extensive workout!), which we've clearly lost. And our government would even agree that we don't do enough. But again, that's a manipulation for profit at many levels.
That's all for now! Sorry that's it a bit long, I do find it hard to give a short answer on this subject, probably why i take one hour per patient's! :-)

btw, this post is probably best placed in the discussion section no? (feel free to copy-past my comment if you need).
