Here is an R.D. Lang poem from a book called KNOTS:
(Appropriate for osteopaths)

JACK: You are a pain in the neck

To stop you giving me a pain in the neck

I protect my neck by tightening my neck muscles,

which gives me the pain in the neck you are.

JILL: My head aches through trying to stop you

giving me a headache.

That should be THE DIVIDED SELF not dived self!!
Early on he did have a profound effect on my thinking. He gloryfied the schizophrenic state and likened it to using LSD. Both do uninhibit the reticular formation to allow in a multitude of stimuli at the same time overcoming the rational system .
At the time I was all for it but in retrospect I think Lang went too far.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness which ruins lives and LSD is bloody dangerous.
It may open up the doors to perception but for most people it is too much of an opening when you are not ready for it.
Some of my good college friends found themselves in the looney bin for a long duration.

R. D. Lang was very much in vogue in the 70's. His seminal book "The Dived Self" , gave fuel to the idea that Shizopenia in particular and mental illness in general were healing proceesses of a culture gone crazy!!
Here is a quote of his;
"Insanity -- a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world."

I worked for Brian Joseph for 10 years from 1977- he is/was a superb technician but worked in a somewhat unorthodox way using a massage assistant to do the ST work. We worked from 9am to 9pm on a 20 minute list, and he had 2 lists at once.

He has unbounded energy and a charisma and presence that had all the patients returning despite what we would now consider to be short treatment.

The IR bulb does not surprise me. I sometimes used the Ultrasound machine, which was an old one with a mechanical timer and red/green flashing lights. We got some good results from it. I did read the manual one day and decided to do the head test (which should have been done very day); the head test failed- no output at all despite the flashing lights. On due enquiry the cleaner admitted she had tripped over the lead about 6 months before, pulling it out of its socket- she simply pushed it back in, without the signal lead connecting and no-one was the wiser!

I remember that Robin Woodleigh visited Brian Joseph's practice who used to tell us how important is was to be a good "practioner"....ie talk to the patients, smile, give em what they want!!
Anyway Robin was shocked to find that the infra-red lamp that was used as an adjunct to treatment had a normal 100 watt Phillips bulb in it!!

Yes Droz I beleive was initially a physio, as was Jill Howells. Phil Latey of course wrote the muscular manidesto and had a girlfriend (Dr Commie Smith) who nervously taught us some medicine. Bumped into a GP working in Brecon recently who knew her!

Phil took Applied Psych, but was miffed that Jody knew as much or more than him re BIoenergetics. Droz said "wghats that got to do with Osteopathy " Steve Sandler asked if it involved experiments with rats in a maze - albino rats! Phil would start his talks with us doing about 30 minutes soft tissue. Yawn.

Dimitri died quite a while ago. He was always quite blunt, but good. Barry Lamberttaught technique with Gill Howells. He became chair of te old GCRO until "the poison dwarf" deposed him .
Blagrave road a scooter and took the foot clinic. One week he had a NP and diagnosed one problem. The patient returned for the follow up nexct week, Blaggers did not recgnise him and diagnosed something else!

Chas Smith took neurology "brachial plexus is like Clapham Junction". Yes, PIUsety took first aid. One lecture he was describing how to do an elective tracheotomy. J Nunn asked "should we be learning this?" and Pusey went through the roof. As he did when I waas taking blood and did it the way Serge had said, which was not how Pusey did it. He had a second practice somewher I did a practice vist to - a tiny little shop with a waiting room and treatment room squeezed in. He went on to pioneer ttt of animals. He was a randy so and so too. Always happy to demostrate how a proctoscope was used.

Did practice visit to Brugermeyer in Herne Hill (?). Called all his pts "squire", even the women. Had wall bars in thge room from which he swung the pt at the end of ttt. Eccentric but superb technician.

Remeber Hardy - old skinny guy. Used to do vigorous prone springing to check the patient was safe to treat. Mrs Weatherall was a bit of a cow (wont say which bit). We were asked for a volunteer once to take a notice from the BSO up to fleet street. Off I trolled . Had to sign for "expenses " (tube fare,) when I got back. Asked her if I could borrow a pen. "Ohh you students, you never have a pen on you. How will you manage when your in practice?" (by not employing a dragon llike you missus)

The girls at the reception had special training in how to loose notes. One was called Lisa, one wore high heels all the time so her calves had shortened and she had to wear built up slippers at home, and there was a very attractive one with a fantastic curvy figure.

Thats all for now.
